Sensory writing
Sensory writing is a technique that taps into the five senses — sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell — to craft detailed, evocative descriptions in storytelling. Instead of merely telling the reader about a setting, character, or event, sensory writing shows them, immersing them in a multisensory experience that makes the narrative world feel tangible. It’s akin to painting a scene, not with colours and brush strokes, but with sensory impressions that conjure a visceral response.
This approach to writing is fundamental in building vivid and memorable scenes. When we read, we subconsciously draw upon our personal reservoir of sensory experiences. By incorporating sensory details, writers can trigger these memories, evoking emotions and reactions that deepen the reader’s connection to the story. Just imagine the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, the sound of stall owners opening their stalls for the day, children’s laughter and the chatter of the crowd around you … What more do you need to unleash your creativity.
All you need is a notebook and paper, your wallet and yourself to join in this experience. Please let Francine know by 15 March 2024 whether you’ll join us
